The energy of our ancestors can play a very powerful force in our lives today, both positive and negative depending on their stories whilst here on earth. We don't just look like our ancestors, we carry the energies of their life stories too eg, pain, tragedy, illness, good or bad fortune etc. After many years on the path of self-discovery I have finally come to understand how important it is to recognise the energy of our ancestors' within each of us, and the ability of those energies to shape our lives if we are not tuned in and gently working to release them to healing.
In order for our ancestors to "rest in peace" their unresolved issues need to be healed otherwise those energies will continue to live on through the next generation. I have seen this generation link play itself out many times in my work with clients and within my own family tree. The unresolved arguments can carry through for generations. The life patterns can also carry through as we are programmed with our ancestors' thinking from a young age. Patterns and habits continue until someone in the family line becomes aware of a negative pattern and says " that's enough, I am not doing it that way anymore". When someone in the family line becomes aware and makes this strong statement, life can take on a new path for them.
As the investigation into our family tree brings the stories of our ancestors to life once more, it is very important that we investigate the tree with love and respect. We want to quickly but gently let go of our ancestors broken stories whilst holding on to any great characteristics and legacies that some of them will have contributed to life here on planet earth. The expression Rest in Peace is used for good reason! When we give attention to an ancestor, we bring life to their story. That energy can begin to show itself in the world around us. This is wonderful if the energy is positive because the story of our ancestor is a good one. On the other hand it is not such good new if their story was painful or tragic. In these cases it is vital that we send some healing to the spirit and name of this ancestor so that they may continue to 'rest in peace' so that we do not bring in their unresolved pain into our lives or into the lives of our loved ones.
When we release our ancestors to peace, love and to the light (or heaven or any other peaceful place that fits with your beliefs) we are letting go of that energy within ourselves. The journey of self-discovery for us can be difficult as it is often only through the dramas in life that we can discover the link between our behaviours and struggles and our ancestors' behaviours and struggles. The liberating news is that we do not have to follow in our ancestors' paths, but we must first choose not to. What we need is to have easy access to the energies of our ancestors' positive qualities (all the things they were good at) and to release the energies of our ancestors' negative (or painful) aspects to peace and to the light. By doing this, we allow that negative energy to be transformed so that we and our children do not need to carry it forward anymore. We break the negative chains of the past and pave the way for more positive energy flows to pass through us and our descendants.
If you are someone who is aware of negative energies in your family at the moment and you can easily trace the energies of this situation back to a previous generation and their unfinished business, then you could try moving that energy on by blessing your ancestors with forgiveness and love. Forgiveness and love is what we are all searching for and these higher energies will transform all other lower energies. When you let go of the anger, resentment and fear from within yourself, and from your connection with these energies in your family line, you are free to fully be yourSELF. Releasing negative energies at the ancestor level can really help to shift them from a deep place within.
A simple way to get started is to repeat the following Ho'oponopono Clearing Mantra: by saying to yourself often whilst thinking about your ancestor(s) 'I am sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you'. Check out: http://www.thereisaway.org/Ho%27oponopono_cleaning_meditation.htm
This mantra is a very simple way to shift any negative energies that are presenting in the moment. no matter how old their original source, so give it a go. By sending these words to someone in your past or present you are also receiving this blessing yourself. When releasing energies, it is important to mention that in addition to letting go of negative energies from our lives, we can also release all the good qualities of our ancestors into our lives. Imagine all the treasures lying unclaimed from all the many great things that some of our ancestors will have achieved, being released into your body, mind and soul.

Affirmation work is the deliberate use of positive statements to change negative thinking and limiting beliefs about oneself. Affirmations need to be positive, personal and in present tense to be effective. Millions of people now use affirmation work to help them stay positive and to move forward in life. Working with affirmations can be challenging at first as the positive statements that need to be made can feel like lies. For example to say 'I am happy' when you feel miserable can be a difficult statement to believe.
Thankfully though there are a couple of ways that can make the process of changing thoughts easier. Louise L Hay, the leading voice in the world of affirmation use, advocates the use of mirror work. Mirror work involves looking into a mirror whilst saying your affirmations. Looking at yourself in the mirror whilst repeating your affirmations will help to give a sense of ownership to the positive statement .
